Our Vision

GIRMITIYA is dedicated to uncovering, preserving, and sharing the cultural history of Girmitiya migrants—the indentured laborers who journeyed across oceans during the colonial era. Our mission is to reconnect the descendants of these migrants with their ancestral roots, rebuild broken family histories, and create a living archive of memory, identity, and resilience.

Through rigorous research, oral histories, archival materials, and digital storytelling, we aim to bridge generations and geographies, fostering a deeper understanding of the sacrifices, struggles, and cultural legacies of the Girmitiya communities. GIRMITIYA stands as a platform for remembrance, reconnection, and revival—ensuring that the voices of the past continue to inspire the present and shape the future.

At GIRMITIYA, we envision a world where the forgotten histories of Girmitiya migrants are not only remembered but deeply valued, studied, and celebrated. These migrants—men, women, and children forcibly transported from India under British colonial rule to work as indentured laborers in distant lands—carried with them not only physical burdens, but also the cultural soul of a civilization. They created new lives under immense hardship, planting the seeds of Indian heritage in places as diverse as Fiji, Mauritius, Trinidad, Suriname, South Africa, and beyond.

Our vision is to build a global platform of cultural remembrance and reconnection—one that brings together the scattered stories, lineages, and memories of Girmitiya descendants. We believe that connecting the families of these migrants is not only an act of historical justice, but also a powerful gesture of cultural healing and identity reconstruction.

Through extensive research, community participation, digital archiving, and storytelling, GIRMITIYA aims to bridge the gap between past and present, between homeland and diaspora, and between history and personal memory. We strive to make the history of indenture accessible and relevant for future generations, scholars, and families seeking to understand where they come from and how those roots shape who they are today.

In doing so, GIRMITIYA aspires to become the most trusted, inclusive, and interactive repository of Girmitiya heritage, where memory breathes, families reunite, and culture thrives.
